Hey there, beautiful souls! ✨
Summer in New York City has officially begun, and the energy in the air is absolutely electric. As someone who’s called this concrete jungle home for years, I’ve experienced firsthand how the city transforms during these warmer months. The parks burst with life, rooftops overflow with laughter, and somehow, the hustle of the city takes on a more carefree rhythm.
I recently shared a video covering my favorite NYC summer activities (which you can watch below!), but I wanted to expand on those thoughts here because, let’s be honest, I can never say enough about this incredible city I call home.
Watch My NYC Summer Guide!
If you’re planning a trip to NYC this summer—or you’re a local looking for new experiences—I’ve got you covered with these seven magical activities that capture the essence of a New York summer.
1. Movies Under the Stars: A NYC Summer Classic
There’s something utterly magical about spreading out a blanket in one of NYC’s iconic parks, unpacking some snacks, and waiting for the sun to set so the movie can begin. A few years ago, I watched «When Harry Met Sally» at Bryant Park, and I still think about that experience regularly. The twinkling city lights serving as a backdrop to a classic film under the stars? That’s the kind of core memory that stays with you forever.
Where to catch outdoor movies:
- Manhattan: Bryant Park (my personal favorite!)
- Brooklyn: Brooklyn Bridge Park
- Queens: Hunter’s Point South Park (this one offers stunning Manhattan skyline views)
Most parks run their movie series from June through August, showing everything from classics to recent blockbusters. Pro tip: Get there early to secure a good spot—these events are popular for good reason!
2. Beach Days: NYC’s Hidden Summer Treasure
When most people think of New York, beaches aren’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. But surprise! We’re actually surrounded by some gorgeous stretches of sand that make for perfect summer day trips.
After exploring many beaches accessible from the city over the years, I’ve narrowed down my favorites:
My top beach picks:
- Rockaway Beach: Hipster vibes, great food options, and decent waves for surfing
- Fort Tilden: A bit more secluded and natural-feeling (though requires more effort to reach)
- Jacob Riis Park: LGBTQ+ friendly with a fun atmosphere
- Long Beach: Clean and well-maintained with a lovely boardwalk
Of course, there’s always Coney Island if you want the quintessential New York beach experience with all the character and carnival atmosphere that comes with it.
For those willing to venture further, Cooper’s Beach in Southampton (my absolute favorite) is worth the journey. Yes, it’s a longer trip, but floating in those pristine waters while gazing at those gorgeous Hamptons mansions in the distance? Pure bliss.
3. Take Me Out to the Ball Game
There’s something so distinctly American—and so distinctly New York—about spending a lazy summer afternoon at a baseball game. The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, the overpriced beer that somehow tastes amazing in that setting… it’s summer perfection.
You’ve got two stellar options here:
- Head to the Bronx to watch the Yankees (my personal preference—go Yankees!)
- Visit Queens to catch the Mets
What I love about baseball games is the relaxed atmosphere. Unlike other sports where you need to be focused intently on every play, baseball games are social experiences. You can chat with friends, enjoy some classic stadium food (hello, soft pretzel!), and soak in the energy of thousands of New Yorkers coming together.
Games typically last 3-5 hours, making them the perfect day activity that transitions into evening plans. Even if you’re not a huge sports fan, the stadium atmosphere alone is worth experiencing.
4. US Open: Tennis Under the Summer Sky
If you’re visiting NYC in late August or early September, you simply cannot miss the US Open. This Grand Slam tennis tournament is held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens and brings an energy to the city that’s completely unique.
While tickets to the main matches can be pricey (especially as the tournament progresses), there are ways to experience the magic without breaking the bank:
- Look for resale tickets as the event approaches
- Check out the qualifying tournament (which is FREE!)
- Attend Fan Week before the official tournament begins
During Fan Week, you can watch players practice, enjoy exhibition matches, listen to live music, and soak in the pre-tournament excitement—all without spending a dime. It’s one of NYC’s best-kept secrets for tennis fans!
I’ve attended the US Open several times, and there’s nothing quite like watching world-class tennis while sipping an overpriced signature cocktail as the sun sets over the Manhattan skyline in the distance. Pure NYC summer magic.
5. Luna Park: Channel Your Inner Child
Sometimes we all need to let loose and embrace our playful side. Luna Park at Coney Island is the perfect place to do just that! Just an hour subway ride from Manhattan, this amusement park offers rides for every comfort level—from mild attractions for those who prefer to keep their feet closer to the ground to thrilling roller coasters for adrenaline junkies like me.
After you’ve had your fill of rides, walk along the historic boardwalk, feel the ocean breeze, and treat yourself to a world-famous Nathan’s hot dog. It’s an essential New York experience that feels a world away from the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
What I love about Luna Park is how it blends nostalgia with modern fun. There’s something so freeing about screaming your lungs out on a roller coaster with the Atlantic Ocean stretching out beside you. Plus, the people-watching at Coney Island is unmatched—it’s where all of New York comes to play.
6. Rooftop Vibes: See the City from Above
Is there anything more quintessentially summer in New York than sipping a cocktail on a rooftop as the sun sets behind the skyline? I think not.
After trying countless rooftop bars over the years (tough research, I know), these are my top recommendations:
- 230 Fifth: This spacious Midtown rooftop offers breathtaking views of the Empire State Building. It’s relatively affordable compared to other options, making it perfect for a night out that won’t destroy your budget.
- Arlo Hotel Rooftop (Brooklyn): For the absolute best views of the Manhattan skyline, this Brooklyn gem can’t be beat. Try to time your visit with sunset—watching the city light up as day turns to night is pure magic.
- Overstory: Located in downtown Manhattan, this sophisticated spot puts you eye-level with some of the city’s most impressive skyscrapers. The space is intimate (read: small), so arrive early or make reservations.
There’s something special about seeing New York from above—it gives you a new perspective on the vastness of the city while somehow making it feel more intimate at the same time. Whether you’re planning a romantic date or a night out with friends, rooftop bars are summer essentials.
7. Pickleball in Central Park: The Trendy Summer Activity
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that pickleball has taken America by storm in recent years. New York City is no exception, and playing at the Wollman Rink location in Central Park is an experience you won’t forget.
City Pickle opened their Central Park courts about a year ago, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite summer activities. Imagine playing this trending sport surrounded by lush greenery with the city’s iconic buildings peeking through the trees. It’s surreal in the best way possible.
I tried it early one morning last summer, and the combination of getting some exercise while enjoying one of the world’s most famous parks was unbeatable. Whether you’re a pickleball pro or a complete newbie, the atmosphere alone makes it worth trying.
This is perfect for a unique date activity or a fun outing with friends that can easily transition into drinks and dinner afterward. Just be sure to book your court time in advance—as with all things cool in NYC, spots fill up quickly!
Final Thoughts: Make This Summer Unforgettable
What makes New York City summers so special isn’t just any single activity—it’s the energy that permeates every corner of the city. People linger longer at outdoor cafes, parks stay filled well into the evening, and there’s a collective understanding that we need to soak up every moment of this magical season before fall returns.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or you’ve lived here your entire life, I hope this list inspires you to try something new this summer. The city offers endless possibilities, and these seven activities are just the beginning.
I’d love to hear about your favorite NYC summer activities! Have you tried any of the ones I mentioned? Do you have others to recommend? Drop a comment below and let’s keep the conversation going.
