Hey there, lovely people!
You know the holidays are here when the air gets chilled, hot cocoa becomes a daily indulgence, and the streets of New York City buzz with festive energy. For me, one of the most magical parts of the season is the tradition of holiday window displays in some of the city’s most iconic department stores. Every year, these sparkling gems draw in locals and tourists alike, filling the streets with wonder and nostalgia.
But first things first, if you’re new here, hi, hello, welcome! My name is Flor, and I’m a content creator living in NYC. I share glimpses of my life as an influencer, a mom to my precious one-year-old daughter Julia, and just, well, a NYC gal trying to soak in all this city has to offer! If you’re curious about what I do or want some real-life insights into the influencer world and motherhood, feel free to explore the blog and my channel. Alright, back to today’s topic! I recently spent the day exploring Midtown Manhattan to check out some of NYC’s most enchanting holiday window displays. If you’re wondering what all the fuss is about, you’re in for a treat. Grab your coffee, tea, or wine (yes, wine is entirely appropriate), and let’s chat.
But first, here’s the vlog in case you want to follow along with me moment by moment. I promise the holiday magic is even better when you see it in motion:
A New York Tradition
If you’re like me and love deep-diving into traditions, you’ll be fascinated to know that holiday window displays have a rich history. Did you know that the tradition of decorating department store windows for Christmas dates all the way back to the late 1800s? I geek out over stories like this! Back in the day, it was a way to spread holiday cheer while boosting sales as people purchased their gifts in person. Why shop online when you could enjoy such charming creativity?
Sadly, in recent years, this tradition has started to fade. Stores like Barneys, which used to be a staple for holiday displays, have closed, and e-commerce has taken over much of the shopping scene. But even with all those challenges, a handful of stores are keeping this holiday magic alive right here in New York City.
That’s why I decided to spend a day visiting Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s to soak up their festive displays before the season flies by.
First Stop: Bloomingdale’s
Bloomingdale’s embraced a whimsical theme this year with a nod to Willy Wonka and all things sparkly and playful. Walking past those windows felt like stepping into a fantasy world. The vibrant colors, shiny ornaments, and larger-than-life props absolutely lit up that section of the city.
I love imagining the effort that goes behind these displays. There are actual teams brainstorming themes, building elaborate props, and even styling the mannequins to fit perfectly with the story. It’s so much more than window dressing. It’s an art form, a performance, and an experience for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
If you’ve never been to Bloomingdale’s during the holidays, put it on your list for next year. Seriously, it’s chef’s kiss.
The Grand Finale at Macy’s
After Bloomingdale’s, I made my way downtown to Macy’s, which felt fitting since the founder of Macy’s is actually credited with starting this window decorating tradition. How cool is that?
This year’s Macy’s window theme was built around Tiptoe the Reindeer, a little character for the holiday season, hopping into new adventures. It’s lighthearted, fun, and totally perfect for families with kids (Julia was mesmerized).
There’s just something so nostalgic about Macy’s. I mean, does anyone not think of Miracle on 34th Street when standing in front of Macy’s? It’s quintessential NYC.
Even with the craziness of modern life, the noise, and the chaos, there’s something special and grounding about being surrounded by these historic displays. Seeing families, couples, friends, and even solo wanderers stop, take pictures, and share the moment is a reminder of what the holidays are really about.
Why This Tradition Matters
Here’s the thing. I get it. Online shopping is convenient, and most of us are way too busy to shop in person these days. But traditions like this remind me why we need to slow down sometimes. Holiday windows aren’t just about shopping or sales – they’re about creating memories.
These displays bring people together. They’re for New Yorkers, tourists, kids, parents, grandparents, and maybe even a few grumpy Scrooges who can’t deny their charm.
I truly hope this tradition continues. The city just wouldn’t feel the same without it. And as I walked away from Macy’s, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of the city, I felt so grateful to live here and experience moments like these.
