Working or studying from home can be both a blessing and a challenge. With the right habits and structure, you can boost your productivity, stay focused, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. After working remotely for over four years, I’ve learned a lot—through both successes and failures. In this post, I’m sharing 10 practical tips to help you make the most of your work-from-home routine.

1. Stick to a Routine
Just because you don’t have a commute doesn’t mean you should wake up at random hours and work in bed all day. Set a daily routine that mirrors a structured workday. Wake up at the same time, shower, get dressed, and start work at a consistent hour—just like you would in an office or school setting.
💡 Pro tip: Having a morning ritual (like making coffee or going for a quick walk) can help signal the start of your workday.
2. Get Dressed
It’s tempting to stay in pajamas all day, but dressing up—even in comfy clothes—helps shift your mindset into “work mode.” You don’t have to wear a suit, but changing into something different than what you slept in can improve productivity.
Find what works for you: Some people feel more productive in jeans and a blazer, while others (like me!) prefer leggings and a cozy sweatshirt.
3. Set Up a Dedicated Workspace
Working from bed might seem like a dream, but it’s actually a productivity killer. Even if you don’t have a home office, carve out a specific area for work—whether it’s a desk, a kitchen table, or a designated corner in your living room.
🏡 Tip: If space is limited, use a portable setup (like a laptop stand and storage box) that you can set up and put away easily.
4. Keep Your Workspace Clean & Organized
A cluttered space leads to a cluttered mind. Keep your desk tidy by removing distractions, only keeping the essentials, and cleaning up at the end of each day.
📦 If you’re working at a shared space (like a dining table), store your work items in a box or bag so you can set up and pack away quickly.
5. Plan & Prioritize Your Tasks
Having a daily to-do list helps you stay on track and prevents distractions. You can use:
✔️ A physical planner
✔️ Digital tools like Notion, Trello, or Google Calendar
✔️ A simple notebook or sticky notes

6. Set Boundaries & Avoid Distractions
Distractions are everywhere—Netflix, social media, house chores… it’s easy to get sidetracked. Set clear limits by:
🚫 Turning off notifications during work hours
⏳ Using the Pomodoro technique (25-minute work sprints with 5-minute breaks)
📵 Keeping your phone away when focusing
7. Take Breaks & Move Your Body
Sitting all day isn’t great for your health or focus. Schedule short breaks to stretch, take a walk, or simply step away from the screen.
🚶♀️ Try this: Set a reminder to stand up and move every 1-2 hours.
8. Stay Connected & Communicate
Working from home can feel isolating. Stay in touch with colleagues, classmates, or friends through:
📞 Video calls
💬 Group chats
👥 Virtual coworking sessions
Staying connected can boost motivation and prevent burnout.
9. Set a Clear End to Your Workday
When working from home, it’s easy to blur the lines between work and personal time. Set a firm “end of work” routine—close your laptop, go for a walk, or do an activity that marks the transition from work mode to personal time.
10. Be Kind to Yourself & Stay Flexible
Not every day will be perfect. Some days you’ll be productive, and others you’ll struggle. That’s okay! Adjust your routine as needed and don’t be too hard on yourself.
💙 Remember: It’s a learning process, and the goal is progress, not perfection.
