Life Lately in NYC: Motherhood, Skincare Events & Stroller Struggles

Hi! It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

If you’re new here—welcome! I’m Flor, a 30-something living and working in New York City. And if you’ve been following me for a while, you probably noticed there’s been a bit of a pause on the NYC vlogs. The truth is… I hadn’t filmed one in over seven months. 😅

A lot has happened since then. I had a baby. I became a mom. And somewhere in the haze of sleepless nights and learning how to care for a tiny human while keeping up with life, vlogging just didn’t fit in. But recently I’ve felt this little pull to come back to the rhythm of documenting my days—and this past week felt like the perfect time to pick up the camera again.

So here’s the vlog that (hopefully) kicks off a new chapter of filming again in 2023. I hope you love it as much as I loved making it:

Getting Back Into the Groove

This vlog follows me through a week of events, errands, and moments that are a pretty real representation of my life these days. I kicked things off by attending a skincare event with Philosophy—yes, the same brand I’ve been obsessed with since my early 20s—and got to try their new serum Dose of Awesome, which I’ll talk more about in a sec.

After that, it was straight to the NYC courthouse (yep, big switch in vibes) to get paperwork certified so that Julia, my daughter, can hopefully get her European passport soon. For anyone who’s trying to go through the dual citizenship process for their kid, I gotchu—email me and I’ll send you all the links. It’s a whole process, but we’re getting there.

Skincare That Works for New Moms

Okay, back to the Philosophy event. The star of the show was their new Dose of Awesome serum. It’s packed with hyaluronic acid and designed to bring that plump, bouncy look back to your skin—which, let’s be real, I need right now. Between postpartum hormones, breastfeeding, and general sleep deprivation, my skin hasn’t exactly been glowing lately.

What I love about this serum is that it doesn’t contain retinol (which I’m avoiding while breastfeeding). It feels hydrating, lightweight, and gives my skin that subtle but real pick-me-up. I’ll definitely be sharing an update on how it works for me over the next few weeks!

On Bureaucracy and Dual Citizenship

I’m in the middle of getting Julia her Slovak passport. It’s a bit of a paperwork nightmare—multiple certifications, official translations, consulate visits—but it’s important to me. I have Argentine and Slovak passports myself, and I want her to have the option of European citizenship, too.

It’s not the most glamorous thing to vlog, but it’s real life. And honestly, part of why I wanted to get back into this kind of content is to show not just the fun stuff but the full picture. The events and the errands. The glowy skincare and the courthouse runs.

Lunch with a Fellow New Mama

Midweek, I had lunch with my friend Trisha—who was pregnant at the same time as me and is now also navigating this whole “mom of a baby in NYC” thing. We chatted about the joys and struggles of early motherhood and the things people don’t always talk about, like:

  • How it can be hard to find joy at first, but then suddenly the tiniest wins—like a nap longer than 30 minutes—start to mean everything.
  • How plans? LOL. They don’t exist anymore.
  • And how people really need to stop suggesting having kids “so you have someone to take care of you when you’re older.” Please, just no.

I loved that moment because it reminded me that we’re not alone, even when it feels like we are.

Navigating the City with a Stroller

Let’s talk logistics. Because one of the biggest challenges for me lately has been figuring out how to move around NYC with a baby in a stroller. Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Not all subway stations have elevators—which should honestly be illegal at this point. I’ve complained to the MTA (and will keep doing so), but in the meantime, Google Maps’ wheelchair accessible option is a lifesaver.
  • You can’t use your stroller on the bus unless you fold it and hold your baby, which defeats the whole purpose of going out with a stroller. There’s a pilot program allowing open strollers on a few routes, but we still have a long way to go.
  • Everything takes longer. Add at least 10 extra minutes to every trip. Elevators are slow and usually out of the way.
  • Baby carriers are amazing for days when the stroller is just too much—but naps and weather don’t always make that doable.

So yeah, it’s a challenge. But we adapt. We plan. We try to be patient. And sometimes we just need to vent about it in a blog post so we don’t scream on the train platform.

Life in This Season

Some days I get to go to fun events, wear something cute, and talk about skincare. Other days I’m juggling documents, diapers, and deadlines. And most days are some mix of the two. This vlog—and this post—are a reflection of that.

If you’re also a mom, a mom-to-be, or even just thinking about how motherhood might fit into your life in the future, I hope this gave you a little glimpse into what it’s been like for me. It’s not all picture-perfect, but there’s beauty in that, too.

Thanks for reading (and watching!). Let me know in the comments what kind of vlogs or posts you want to see more of, and I’ll do my best to bring them to life. 💛

Until next time,

Flor.
