Hi! If you’re new here, welcome — and if you’ve been around for a while, welcome back! This is the blog version of Episode 2 in my Halloween in NYC series over on YouTube, and today we’re heading to one of the most charming and cinematic neighborhoods in the city: the West Village.
Before we dive into all the pumpkins and pastel Halloween decor, I want to give you a little context — because, well, I’m that girl who likes mixing city facts with cozy vibes. Think of this post as a mix of a travel diary, a seasonal stroll, and a love letter to fall in New York 🍂
📍Where Is the West Village, Exactly?
Let’s get our bearings first: the West Village is a historic, picturesque pocket of lower Manhattan. It’s officially part of the larger Greenwich Village area — but the West Village has its own personality. It’s bordered by:
- 6th Avenue to the east
- Houston Street to the south
- 14th Street to the north
- The Hudson River and West Side Highway to the west
This is the kind of neighborhood where you’ll find brownstones covered in ivy, cute corner cafes with vintage signs, cobblestone streets, and houses that go all out for Halloween. And spoiler alert: the decorations did not disappoint.

🎃 Why the West Village Feels Extra Magical in October
So, real talk: in all my years of living in New York City, I had never visited the West Village during the Halloween season. I know. Shocking. Somehow I always got caught up with work or life or just forgot, but this year I made it happen — and now I don’t think I can go a single October without coming back.
Here’s what I loved most about it:
1. The Decorations Are Both Whimsical and Classy
If the Upper East Side goes for full-blown glam Halloween (think elaborate spiderwebs, giant skeletons in tuxedos, and luxury pumpkins), the West Village goes for charm. Lots of:
- Pastel pumpkins (yes, pastel!)
- Soft orange and sage greens
- Flower arrangements in Halloween tones
- Skeletons in very curated poses 😅
It felt more curated than chaotic, which I loved.
2. The Streets Themselves Are Straight Out of a Movie
If you’ve ever watched Sex and the City, Friends, or literally any rom-com set in NYC, you’ve seen the West Village — even if you didn’t realize it. We walked past:
- Perry Street (where Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment was filmed)
- Cornelia Street (yes, that Cornelia Street — hi, Swifties 🫶)
- And the corner apartment from Friends, where Monica, Rachel, Joey, and Chandler supposedly lived
Even if you’re not big on pop culture, these streets are just gorgeous. So many trees, corner stoops, brownstones with Halloween garlands on their railings — I mean, come on.
3. History Lives Here
The West Village isn’t just pretty. It’s also a deeply meaningful place for the LGBTQ+ community. This is where the Stonewall Riots began — at the Stonewall Inn — and where so much history around Pride and equality was born.
The neighborhood has always had a spirit of openness, creativity, and rebellion. And honestly, that shows in the way people decorate, too. It’s not cookie-cutter Halloween — it’s bold and expressive in the best way.

👻 Comparing It to the Upper East Side
If you haven’t already, go watch Episode 1 of this Halloween series, where we explored the Upper East Side. That one had a totally different vibe — still beautiful, but much more polished and Upper East Side-ish (if you know what I mean 😏).
The West Village, in comparison, felt more neighborhood-y. Like people decorate for fun, not to compete. And I noticed so many pumpkins. Like, everywhere. Weird ones too! Lumpy, warty, pastel — the full squad.
