Five Books I Loved in 2020 – Book Recommendations

Hi everyone! Welcome back to the blog. If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love reading, and today I’m sharing five more books I read in 2020 that I absolutely loved. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out my previous book recommendation post here, where I shared five other books that made a lasting impression on me.

Without further ado, here are my latest must-read book recommendations!

1. This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

This book was hands-down one of my favorites of 2020! Adam Kay, a former junior doctor in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), kept a diary during his years in medicine, detailing the highs, the lows, and the absurdities of working on the frontlines of healthcare.

Kay’s writing is both hilarious and heartbreaking. He gives an honest account of what it’s really like to be a doctor—the long hours, the emotional toll, and the bureaucratic headaches. But through all the chaos, there’s also joy, dedication, and deeply human moments.

This book made me laugh out loud, tear up, and gain an even greater appreciation for healthcare workers. If you’re looking for a book that is witty, raw, and incredibly engaging, this one is a must-read!

2. The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty

If you love a good domestic thriller with compelling characters, then The Husband’s Secret is for you. Liane Moriarty, the author of Big Little Lies, does an incredible job weaving together multiple storylines filled with intrigue, drama, and emotional depth.

The story follows Cecilia Fitzpatrick, a seemingly perfect wife and mother who discovers a letter written by her husband—one that contains a secret so dark it could change everything. As she grapples with the truth, the novel explores themes of morality, love, and the ripple effects of our choices.

While I found the first half of the book incredibly gripping, the second half became somewhat predictable. That being said, I still think it’s a great read, and I recommend it if you enjoy psychological dramas that keep you guessing.

3. Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

This novel was an eye-opener in many ways. Such a Fun Age follows Emira, a young Black woman who works as a babysitter for a wealthy white family in Philadelphia. One night, while taking the child she babysits to a grocery store, Emira is falsely accused of kidnapping. The incident is filmed by a bystander, setting off a chain of events that forces the characters to confront uncomfortable truths about race, privilege, and identity.

I really appreciated how Kiley Reid explored these complex themes in a way that felt real and thought-provoking without being preachy. The book challenges readers to examine their own biases and assumptions, all while telling a compelling and engaging story.

Fun fact: Lena Waithe has acquired the rights to adapt this book into a TV series or movie, so keep an eye out for that!

4. One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus

If you’re into mystery-thrillers with a Breakfast Club vibe, you’ll love One of Us Is Lying. The story revolves around five high school students who walk into detention—but only four make it out alive. The victim, Simon, was about to reveal secrets about his classmates on his gossip blog, making everyone in the room a suspect.

The book kept me guessing until the very end. It’s a YA novel, so if you’re not a fan of young adult fiction, it might not be for you, but I personally really enjoyed it. The mystery was well-paced, the characters were interesting, and the twists kept me hooked.

5. One of Us Is Next by Karen McManus

This is the sequel to One of Us Is Lying, and it picks up after the events of the first book. With Simon gone, a new game emerges at Bayview High—Truth or Dare. But this is no ordinary game. As secrets unravel and dares escalate, the students realize that someone is pulling the strings in a dangerous way.

While I didn’t find this book as suspenseful as the first one, it was still an entertaining read. If you enjoyed One of Us Is Lying, you’ll probably want to check out this sequel.

Final Thoughts

These were five of the books I loved reading in 2020! Each one brought something different to the table—humor, mystery, drama, or social commentary—and I highly recommend checking them out.
