1. Start Working with What You Have

I know, this might sound super obvious, but trust me—it’s the first step. When I moved to New York in 2016, I had a blog and a tiny social media following, but I had no idea how to turn that into a full-time career. I didn’t have any brand partnerships, no connections, and definitely no clue how I was going to make it work.

But here’s the thing: I just started. I didn’t wait for the “perfect moment.” I didn’t wait for brands to reach out. Instead, I committed to creating content consistently. I filmed two YouTube videos every week, wrote blog posts three times a week, and posted daily on Instagram and Instagram Stories. I had no sponsorships, no gifted products, and nothing glamorous to show off.

What I did have was passion and a willingness to put in the work. And guess what? People started noticing. By consistently creating content, I was able to build my portfolio, my brand, and my credibility. So, if you’re just starting out, don’t wait for the “right time” to get started. The right time is now.

2. Find Your Tribe

This one was a huge challenge for me when I first moved to NYC. I didn’t know anyone in the fashion, beauty, or travel industry, and I felt totally isolated. But I didn’t let that stop me. The power of the internet is real, my friends! I used social media to connect with fellow influencers and creators in New York. I reached out to people whose work I admired and who had similar interests. I followed their accounts, interacted with their posts, and eventually met them at events.

Here’s the key: don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Whether you’re messaging people on Instagram, attending industry events, or networking through LinkedIn, make it a point to meet others in the field. Not only will it open doors, but it’ll also give you a support system that can be invaluable in your growth.

3. Be Your Own Spokesperson

If you’re anything like me, talking about yourself can feel awkward. I’m pretty shy in real life, and it wasn’t easy for me to strike up conversations with new people—especially when I didn’t have a big following or any brand deals to brag about. But if you want to be a content creator, you need to learn how to sell yourself. It’s not about bragging—it’s about sharing your story and your work in a way that makes others believe in you.

I had a couple of moments early on when I had to step up and be my own advocate. One of those moments was when I went to my first New York Fashion Week in 2016. I was starstruck to meet Fleur de Force, a YouTuber I had followed for years. After the show, I approached her, introduced myself, and told her what I was working on. Little did I know that one conversation would lead to a connection at MAC Cosmetics, which later turned into amazing opportunities with the brand.

So, when you meet people in your field, don’t be shy. Go for it—introduce yourself and let them know what you’re working on. You never know where it might lead.

4. Say Yes to Every Opportunity

This is something I learned early on and have carried with me ever since. In the beginning, I said yes to EVERYTHING. Whether it was an event, a lunch date with a fellow influencer, or a coffee with someone I thought could be helpful—if it was an opportunity to meet new people or learn something new, I said yes.

I understand the value of being selective about the events you attend as your career grows, but when you’re starting out, every chance is an opportunity. Some of the most valuable connections I’ve made came from saying yes to things that I didn’t expect to lead anywhere. So don’t hesitate to take that extra step and say yes to whatever comes your way.

5. Use All the Tools at Your Disposal

In today’s world, you have so many tools at your fingertips. If you want to find brand contacts or influencers to connect with, just Google it. Find the right person to reach out to and send them an email or DM. Follow PR agencies on Instagram, check out their websites, and don’t be afraid to get in touch.

For me, when I was just starting out, I’d look at smaller influencers in NYC who were tagging PR agencies or brands in their posts. I’d make sure to send those agencies a message introducing myself and sharing my work. The effort paid off when I landed my first brand collaborations.
