Finding Home in a Munich Apartment: Our 70m² Haven in Schwabing West

Hey loves!

If you’ve been following along on my social journey, you know that change is the only constant in my life. Before I dive into all the details about our next adventure (make sure you’re subscribed and following my Instagram for that big reveal!), I wanted to take you on a proper tour of the cozy Munich apartment we’ve called home for the past couple of years.

There’s something bittersweet about documenting a space right before saying goodbye to it, isn’t there? Each corner holds memories, each room tells stories of the life we built here with my husband and our fur baby, Oreo. Munich has been such a special chapter for us, especially in Schwabing West, which strikes that perfect balance between big-city energy and small-town community vibes.

Finding Our Perfect Space in Munich

Let’s talk about apartment hunting in Munich—it’s no joke! The market here is incredibly competitive, and finding a place that ticks all your boxes while not completely emptying your bank account feels like winning the lottery.

Our 70 square meter (750 square feet) one-bedroom apartment came with a €2,000 monthly price tag. I know, I know—that seems steep! But in Munich’s rental market, we actually scored some amazing features that made it worth every euro:

  • Brand new build (we were the first tenants!)
  • Floor-to-ceiling windows (the natural light is a dream for content creation)
  • Heated floors throughout (absolute game-changer during German winters)
  • Elevator access (rare in Munich’s older buildings)
  • Storage unit in the basement
  • And that balcony with sunset views!

The Heart of Our Home: Kitchen & Dining

The kitchen was honestly what sold me on this apartment. The sleek white cabinetry makes everything feel so clean and bright, and the island with built-in stovetop became the natural gathering spot whenever we had friends over.

My coffee station deserves a special shoutout—if you’ve watched my morning routine videos, you’ve definitely seen my beloved espresso machine making magic! Those caramel macchiatos have powered me through countless work sessions and early mornings.

Something I didn’t mention enough in the video is how the kitchen layout made meal prep so enjoyable. Having everything within arm’s reach while still having enough counter space to spread out made cooking feel less like a chore and more like a creative outlet—even on busy weeknights.

The dining area connecting the kitchen to the living room doesn’t get as much use as it should (let’s be real, we’re totally sofa dinner people most nights), but it’s been perfect for hosting family dinners and game nights with friends.

Living Room: Multifunctional Bliss

Living in a one-bedroom apartment means every square meter needs to work double duty. Our living room has been our movie theater, my husband’s gaming zone, Oreo’s playground, and sometimes even our yoga studio!

The IKEA L-shaped sofa was seriously the best investment—not only is it super comfortable for Netflix marathons, but the storage underneath has been clutch for hiding extra bedding, seasonal decor, and all those «where should I put this?» items.

Those Nanoleaf lights were definitely a splurge, but they’ve completely transformed movie nights. There’s something magical about watching them react to whatever we’re watching, creating this immersive glow that changes with each scene. Plus, they photograph beautifully for Instagram!

Creating a WFH Space That Actually Works

When the pandemic hit shortly after we moved in, our office setup behind the couch became command central. Not the conventional office layout, maybe, but it’s worked surprisingly well! Being next to those big windows meant natural light for Zoom calls (we all know how important good lighting is), and the standing desk option saved my back on long editing days.

My little corner with the magazine prints was my pandemic project—cutting out images that inspired me and framing them created a personal touch without breaking the bank. Sometimes the best decor doesn’t have to be expensive!

For anyone struggling with a WFH setup in a small space, my advice is always the same: invest in the chair and desk first, add personality with wall art, and keep everything else minimal. Your back (and your focus) will thank you!

Our Bedroom: Simplicity is Key

Maybe it’s just me getting older, but I’ve come to appreciate a minimalist bedroom. Our IKEA Pax wardrobe with mirrored doors has been a space-saving miracle, making the room feel twice its actual size while hiding all our clothes (and yes, I’ve accumulated way too many sweaters since moving to Germany).

The absolute highlight of this room, which I still can’t get over: waking up on clear days to a view of the actual Alps! There’s something surreal about sipping your morning coffee in bed while looking at mountains. It’s those little moments that made this apartment special.

The chest of drawers that many of you recognize from my sit-down videos has become my unofficial filming spot. The natural light combined with those color-changing lights creates the perfect ambiance for filming, even on gloomy German winter days.

Bathroom: Practical Luxury

Having in-unit laundry in Europe is honestly a luxury I didn’t appreciate enough until we moved here. Our spacious bathroom accommodating both a washer and dryer has been such a game-changer—no more scheduling laundry days around trips to the laundromat or shared facilities!

The heated floors (controlled by those little panels on the walls) made even the coldest winter mornings bearable. There’s nothing quite like stepping onto warm tiles after a shower when it’s freezing outside.

Life in Schwabing West

Beyond our four walls, Schwabing West has been the perfect neighborhood for us. Having a supermarket literally at our doorstep made grocery runs so convenient, especially during lockdown periods. The 15-minute walk to Olympiapark became our daily ritual with Oreo, giving us much-needed fresh air and exercise.

What I’ve loved most about this area is that perfect balance—it’s undeniably Munich with all the city advantages, but it has this neighborhood feel where you recognize faces and greet the same dog walkers each morning. It feels safe, welcoming, and just the right pace.

The 40-minute walks to Marienplatz or the English Garden became our weekend adventures, exploring different routes each time and discovering hidden gems along the way—tiny cafés, bookshops, and local boutiques that tourists usually miss.

Reflections on Creating a Home Away from Home

This apartment has been more than just walls and furniture—it became our sanctuary during a pretty wild time in the world. We moved in at the beginning of 2020 (talk about timing!), and having this comfortable space during lockdowns was something I’ll always be grateful for.

I’ve learned that creating a home isn’t about having the biggest space or the most expensive furniture. It’s about making thoughtful choices that reflect your lifestyle and bring you joy. For us, that meant prioritizing:

  • Natural light (hence those amazing windows)
  • Flexible spaces that could adapt to our changing needs
  • Personal touches that tell our story
  • Practical storage solutions (because nobody loves visible clutter!)
  • Technology that enhances our daily life (robot vacuum, I’m looking at you)

Perhaps the biggest lesson has been learning to appreciate the present moment in each space we inhabit. This apartment has been a chapter—a beautiful, challenging, growth-filled chapter—but not the whole story. And now as we pack up to move on to our next adventure, I’m taking all these lessons with me.

Until next time,

Flor ✨
