Getting to Know Me: Answering Your Questions After My Return to NYC

Hey everyone!

If you’ve been following me for a while, welcome back! And if you’re new here, I’m Flor, and I’m so glad you found your way to my little corner of the internet. Since I started uploading again in March after a three-month break, I’ve noticed many new faces joining us—especially those interested in apartment hunting and tours in NYC. I thought this would be the perfect time for a good old Q&A session to help you get to know me better.

I typically do these Q&As about twice a year (my last ones were in March and September 2021), so we were definitely due for a new one! I asked for your questions through my Instagram stories, and today I’m answering ten of them.

Before we dive into the written version, here’s the full video if you prefer to watch:

How Are You Really Doing?

First off, thank you for caring enough to ask this question! I always appreciate when you all check in on me.

I’m genuinely doing great, and that’s not just something I’m saying for the internet. I’ve been in a good place for several months now, and being back in New York—my favorite city in the world—has only amplified that happiness. Being here means returning to what I love most: attending events, going to meetings, creating content across all my platforms (YouTube, Instagram, vlogs, Twitter, TikTok), and just soaking in the energy of this incredible city right outside my window.

I feel like 2022 is shaping up to be a year of getting back on track, establishing new routines, meeting new people, and reconnecting with friends I haven’t seen in ages due to the pandemic and my time away from NYC. So yes, I’m good—really good—and thanks again for asking!

What Would You Tell Your Younger Self?

This question comes from someone who’s been following me for about 11-12 years (thank you!), wondering what advice I’d give to my past self when I first started my blog back in May 2010.

It’s wild to think about how much has changed in those 12 years. I think if I could go back and talk to that younger Flor, I would simply say: «Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re on the right path, and I believe in you.»

That might sound simple, but the truth is, when I first started creating content, nobody believed in what I was doing. No one told me that building something from literally nothing into a career was possible—that I could write and make videos about things I love and people would actually want to read and watch.

It wasn’t until around 2014 when I met my now-husband (then friend) that someone genuinely saw potential in my work. He was the first person who believed my content could grow into something more, even a business. That validation was shocking because until then, no one had told me anything like that.

So to my younger self: Trust the process. Believe in yourself. You’re doing amazing, sweetie! (Had to throw that in there!)

What Do You Use to Take Your Photos and Videos?

This is something I get asked quite often! I think there’s a common misconception that great photos and videos require expensive equipment, but that’s simply not true.

Today’s cell phones are incredible, and I use them frequently alongside my cameras. Which one I choose depends entirely on what I’m planning to shoot or whether it’s more of a spontaneous moment.

For those curious about my specific gear:

  • Phones: I use a Pixel 6 Pro (great for photos, especially with its amazing zoom capabilities) and an iPhone 12 Pro Max (which I find better for videos)
  • Cameras: A Canon 5D Mark IV (technically Thomas’s, but he lets me use it for my YouTube videos like this Q&A) and a Canon M50 (a smaller mirrorless camera that’s perfect for on-the-go shooting)

The truth is, the device matters far less than how you use it. If you check my Instagram, you’d be surprised how many of those photos were taken with just a phone!

What Camera Would You Recommend for Trips?

Building on the previous question, I want to start by saying: don’t rush to spend a lot of money on new camera equipment just for a trip!

If you have a relatively recent smartphone (from the last year or two), its camera is likely already fantastic. I’ve taken both my Pixel and iPhone on trips without bringing a separate camera, and the results were amazing. In fact, I filmed an entire weekly vlog in Germany last year using just my Pixel 5, and many viewers couldn’t even tell it wasn’t shot on a professional camera.

My advice: Take your phone and maybe invest in a portable battery pack so you don’t run out of juice midday.

But if you’re determined to get a dedicated camera (maybe you’re starting a vlog channel), I’d suggest focusing on audio first—it’s often more important than video quality. Consider using your phone with an external microphone like a Rode mic for the best of both worlds.

If you still want camera recommendations, I’d suggest either:

  • The Canon M50 (which I’ve had for years)
  • The Sony ZV-E10 (which I use for my weekly NYC vlogs)

Both have great price points and excellent quality for vlogging. I’ll link to both in the comments below!

Do You Miss Anything from Munich?

For those who don’t know, we lived in Munich, Germany, before moving back to NYC. Do I miss it? This is a tricky one.

I don’t think I miss anything specific about Munich or Germany, but I do appreciate how calm everything was there—how relaxed everyone seemed and how life moved at a different pace. That atmosphere really helped us through the pandemic, which we spent mostly in Munich.

What I feel about our time in Germany is that it was a good experience that helped us grow as a couple. It was just the two of us and our dog Oreo, and that time truly made us stronger. But it feels like a closed chapter in my life—like when you look back at college or a previous job with fond memories but don’t necessarily want to return.

I have the warmest, happiest memories of Munich, and I’d say it’s one of the best chapters in my 34 years. It started at the right moment, ended at the right moment, and everything in between was beautiful. But I don’t miss living there.

How to Create Content Without a Niche?

This is such a great question! When it comes to creating content without a specific niche, I have two perspectives to share.

From my personal experience, I started my blog without a defined niche. I wrote about everything I loved—fashion, travel, movies, TV shows, photography—and let my platforms evolve naturally with my changing interests. If I became more fascinated with fashion at any point, my content would naturally shift in that direction.

I don’t believe having a niche is essential for growing an audience. People connect with content creators because of their personalities, not necessarily because they stick to one topic. Your unique perspective is what brings people back.

That said, when I started this English YouTube channel (nearly 10 years after beginning my content creation journey), I knew I needed a more strategic approach. On platforms like YouTube and Instagram, having a niche can help you grow faster because it makes your content more searchable and targeted.

The potential downside? If you build an audience around a specific niche and later want to change directions, you might lose followers who came specifically for that content.

My advice: Don’t stress about finding a niche if you’re just starting out. Begin creating content around things you love, and over time, you’ll naturally discover 3-4 topics you enjoy discussing most. Your audience will grow with you—perhaps more slowly than if you had a strict niche, but in a more authentic way that gives you freedom to evolve.

What Do You Like Most About Your Job?

There are three things I absolutely love about what I do:

First, the flexibility. Even when I worked for companies, I always craved more flexibility—the ability to work from home, from abroad, or from a coffee shop. Now I can work from my desk, my couch, or a different country entirely. As long as I have my laptop and an internet connection, I’m good to go!

Second, the variety. No two days are the same, and I can adjust my tasks based on my mood or circumstances. If I wake up not feeling camera-ready (hello, surprise pimples or period days!), I can switch gears—maybe edit videos, respond to emails, or brainstorm new content ideas instead of filming. I love being able to balance creative days in front of the camera with more low-key days behind the scenes.

Finally, the privilege of genuinely enjoying what I do. I get to talk about books when I love reading, connect with an audience who shares my interests, try new makeup products sent by brands, test skincare when I’m passionate about it—essentially, I get to center my career around things I’d be interested in regardless. That’s truly special.

What Accomplishment Are You Most Proud Of?

Looking back, there are three accomplishments that stand out to me:

First, finishing university. Not because people who attend university are smarter (they’re not!), but because completing a degree shows perseverance—the strength to sit in that chair for hours studying subjects that aren’t always fascinating. It demonstrates character and willingness to tackle challenges.

Second, turning my blog into a business. I literally started something from nothing and built it into a career that generates income and allows me to work with companies. Taking that initial Blogspot site from 2010 and transforming it into an actual business is something I’m incredibly proud of.

Third, relocating my business from Argentina to New York. Moving to NYC meant starting over with nothing but willpower and dreams. I had no contacts except my boyfriend, no trust fund, no family connections—just determination. Slowly building my audience here, developing relationships with brands and agencies, getting invited to New York Fashion Week—all of that took immense effort and represents a huge accomplishment for me.

What’s Your Biggest Learning from the Pandemic?

Before I answer this, a quick public health announcement: The pandemic isn’t over! Please keep testing, wearing masks, getting vaccinated, and staying safe.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned—and I think many of us have—is that nothing is guaranteed. Tomorrow isn’t promised. We all had plans for 2020 and 2021, whether small gatherings with friends or major life changes, and we had to scratch everything and start over.

There’s this quote from Kung Fu Panda (yes, really!): «Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift—that’s why it’s called the present.» As silly as it might seem coming from an animated movie, there’s profound truth there.

This experience has taught me to be more present—to truly engage when I’m having drinks with friends or on a call with family. Make plans, absolutely! Plan that trip to Europe or Asia, but don’t postpone it until «perfect» conditions arrive. Don’t wait to start that YouTube channel until you have every piece of equipment.

Enjoy the little things: walking your dog, watching flowers bloom, feeling summer rain, hugging your mom, sending a birthday message to a friend. These moments matter because they’re happening now, and «now» is all we can truly count on.

Would You Go Back to Living in Argentina?

This is something I’m asked frequently. For those who don’t know, I was born and raised in Argentina and moved to New York in 2016—not that long ago considering my whole life span.

When I first moved to NYC, the plan was to stay for just 3-6 months. I arrived in July 2016, returned to Argentina around November/December, came back to New York for a few more months… and every time I said «just six more months,» those six months would turn into more. Eventually, I realized how much I loved living in New York.

Even after moving to Munich for two years, my feeling about not wanting to return to Argentina remained. To this day, moving back isn’t in our plans. We’re not thinking, «In two years we’ll go back» or «Once we save enough for a house, we’ll return.»

That doesn’t mean it will never happen—if the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that plans can change in an instant. I’d never say «never,» but our intention is to stay in New York (or perhaps nearby in upstate NY) for the foreseeable future.

Final Thoughts

And that wraps up my Q&A! I hope this gave you a better glimpse into who I am, what I think about, and what my plans are for the future. I love doing these sessions because they help us connect on a deeper level beyond just apartment tours and fashion posts.
