Hey everyone!
Fashion Week season is upon us again, and I couldn’t be more excited to share my experiences from this September’s New York Fashion Week with all of you! As a first-time mom in my 30s living in New York City and working as a full-time content creator, balancing motherhood with the chaos and glamour of Fashion Week has been quite the adventure.
For those of you who might be new here (hello and welcome!), Fashion Week happens twice a year—February and September—when designers, brands, and creatives from all over the world gather to showcase upcoming collections. It’s a whirlwind of runway shows, presentations, networking events, and of course, incredible fashion moments everywhere you look.
This year’s experience was particularly special for me. After welcoming my daughter Julia earlier this year, I’ve been slowly easing back into the fashion world, finding my rhythm and confidence again. September’s NYFW felt like coming home in many ways, and I’m thrilled to take you behind the scenes with me!
The Video Experience
Before I dive into all the details, check out my full NYFW vlog to get the complete Fashion Week experience:
Day 1: Starting Strong with L’AGENCE
Fashion Week kicked off with a presentation by L’AGENCE. Something I’ve been trying to do this season (a tip I picked up from Court and Kelly) is dressing according to the brand’s aesthetic even when I’m not wearing their pieces. L’AGENCE is known for their elevated basics—blazers, dress pants, sleek silhouettes—so I channeled that vibe with pants from Asos, a top from COS, and my new VIVAIA shoes.
It was brutally hot in NYC (typical September weather—always catching us between seasons!), so I had to skip the blazer, but I still wanted to honor the brand’s style. That’s one of the first lessons of Fashion Week—you have to balance fashion with practicality, especially when you’re running around the city all day!
Day 2: Alice + Olivia Dreams Come True
Saturday brought one of my most anticipated events—the Alice + Olivia presentation! After years (yes, YEARS) of requesting invitations and facing rejection or silence, I finally received that coveted «yes.» It was such a milestone moment for me, a genuine step forward in my fashion career.
Each season when I get invited to a show I’ve never attended before, it feels like validation—like I’m moving in the right direction despite all the challenges and «no’s» along the way.
The weather continued to be scorching (around 90°F), which completely changed my outfit plans. I had originally planned a blazer and pants combo but quickly pivoted to a sleeveless dress. This is another reality of Fashion Week that you don’t always see on Instagram—sometimes comfort has to win over concept, especially when you’re melting on the subway platform!
One question I get asked frequently is whether I plan my outfits and beauty looks in advance. For outfits, I usually have a few statement pieces I know I want to showcase and then build around them based on the brand’s aesthetic and the day’s events. For hair and makeup, I’ve learned to keep things simple and consistent. This season, with my new shorter haircut (thank goodness for that decision during NYC summer!), styling took less than five minutes—just some product to tame frizz and I was good to go.
For makeup, I decided on a signature look for the entire week: winged eyeliner, mascara, and red lips. Having this uniform approach saved me so much time and stress—no need to create a unique look each day just to have it melt off in the heat!
Day 3: Family Fashion with H&M and Eva Chen
Day 3 brought one of my favorite events—a family-friendly collaboration between H&M and Eva Chen. I wore a red Commando set paired with a Mickey Mouse tank top from Primark (fashion doesn’t always have to be expensive!) and finally gave my feet a break with comfortable sneakers after two days in heels.
The event was beautifully designed with children in mind—story time, arts and crafts, embroidery stations, and personalized t-shirt making. Even though Julia is still a bit young for most activities, she was absolutely wonderful! She smiled at everyone, seemed eager to interact with other kids, and honestly stole the show. These moments where I can bring my daughter into my professional world are so precious to me.
After the H&M event, we headed to the Tara Babylon presentation, which is always magical with its fairy-tale aesthetics and pastel palette. The contrast between these two events—one family-focused and playful, the other ethereal and dreamy—perfectly captures the diversity of experiences Fashion Week offers.
Day 4: Full Circle Moment
For the final day, I decided to do something that goes against typical fashion industry expectations—I rewore an outfit I had worn five or six years ago! The same dress, same shoes, same bag—everything identical. It’s actually one of my all-time favorite Fashion Week looks, and based on your comments over the years, I know many of you love it too.
I firmly believe in wearing and rewearing pieces we love. Fast fashion culture has conditioned us to think we need something new for every occasion, but there’s something so confident and sustainable about saying, «This still works, and I still love it.» My Asos dress, River Island boots, and splurge Chloe bag made their triumphant return!
The day included the Dennis Basso runway show—actually the only traditional runway I attended this season due to time constraints—followed by an event with Alexis Bittar, the brand behind the statement earrings I’ve been wearing all week.
The day ended with a dramatic New York moment—getting caught in a sudden downpour and arriving home completely soaked! But in true Fashion Week spirit, my makeup was still flawless (shoutout to setting spray and powder—the real MVPs).
What Fashion Week Really Means Today
Fashion Week has evolved dramatically over the years. What started as an industry-only gathering for designers, buyers, magazine editors, and stylists has transformed into a more inclusive event. About a decade ago, fashion bloggers entered the scene, followed by a massive influx of content creators and influencers.
While the traditional players—department store buyers, stylists, and magazine editors—are still very much present, creators like me now play an important role too. Our job is to attend shows and presentations, then translate what we see on the runway for our audiences. We’re essentially decoding high fashion and showing how these trends might work in everyday life.
What you see on the runway during September’s Fashion Week is what designers are planning for Spring/Summer 2024—looks that will hit stores around March or April next year. As content creators, we help bridge the gap between these avant-garde runway looks and practical, accessible fashion.
Beyond showcasing clothes, Fashion Week is an invaluable networking opportunity. Meeting other creators I’ve only known through social media, connecting face-to-face with PR teams I’ve been emailing for months or years, and building genuine relationships that often lead to collaborations and opportunities down the line.
Final Thoughts: Finding My Groove Again
This Fashion Week felt particularly significant for me. After Julia was born in February, I took things slowly, giving myself grace as I navigated new motherhood alongside my career. September’s events marked a turning point—I attended more shows, felt more confident in my fashion choices, and most importantly, felt more like myself again.
I’m sometimes shy around people I admire, but this season I pushed myself to make connections and step out of my comfort zone. It’s always a privilege to experience Fashion Week from the inside—to sit front row at shows and witness these creative presentations firsthand.
Thank you for following along on this journey with me. Your support makes these opportunities possible, and I love being able to share these experiences with you. Whether you’re interested in fashion as a career or simply enjoy the artistry and creativity, I hope these glimpses behind the scenes inspire you in some way.
Until next season!
xo, Flor
