What happens before a big project launch

[English translation below – scroll down!]

Besos, Flor.

After telling you that I was working on a new project in recent weeks, this past Monday I could finally tell you what it is about: I am working on a Fashion Design Program with Manhattan College, a university in New York.

You can read all about the program, prices, and how to register in this link.

But before telling you «with my words» exactly what it is about and because I am super happy to be part of this, I want to give you some context.

When someone we know (or rather, we continue on social networks) makes some great announcement or account of what «that» is about what I was working on a while ago, it may seem that certain people get opportunities from the sky or arise by magic, or that they are touched by a magic wand (I am guilty of this myself) and… ok, sure there are those people and those opportunities, but in most cases everything is the result of months of work “behind scene ”until something comes to light.

To give you an idea, my first approach with Manhattan College was in September 2018. As you may remember, I worked with UADE on a program they did in New York City, and I came to this program as a university graduate and for having had a good relationship with several of my professors, one of whom is today the director of the Law School.

Somehow, and although it sounds silly and «cheesy» were years of study and then years of maintaining good relationships with certain people that led me to finally participate in that project last year and get in touch with a university like Manhattan College .

And on the other hand, there is the world of fashion.

When I was 16/17 years old and that moment of choosing a career came, one of the things I liked and that I thought about studying at the university was a career related to fashion and design (and another was writing, and journalism … do you see any connection with reality? hahaha). However, and coming from a very traditional family when choosing careers, I left those dreams behind and decided to devote myself to something else.

But the love for fashion, trends, style … for all that was still there and led me somehow to create this blog almost 10 years ago, and start reviewing celebrity looks and posting my own looks.

The turns of life, as they say, did not lead me to study «Fashion Design» as perhaps my adolescent self would have wished and imagined, but I ended up finally dedicating myself to fashion, learning little by little, with the help of books, of magazines, videos, internet. Learning from other people, seeking to understand a little more each day about one of the things I like the most.

It was like this that I was changing (and in my opinion improving) my personal style over the years (this blog IS a witness), trying new trends. My looks were inspiring a community of people who began to follow me, to get the attention of brands that wanted to give me their clothes or invite me to events, until they finally «finally» came to parades in New York Week.

So … getting to the time to «partner» with Manhattan College to launch a Fashion Design program in New York City was something that … maybe, in itself, took a few months, but that actually were YEARS working on the industry that led to that moment.

Now yes: let’s talk about the program.

Together with Manhattan College we organize a fashion program from February 6 to 13, 2020 in New York City.

This intensive one-week program integrates discussions with fashion experts, companies and designers with visits to studios, shops and a Fashion Week parade, which together provide a unique opportunity to learn and establish contacts (the famous “networking” »!) And to get an idea of what it means to work in the fashion industry in New York.

In addition to visits and conversations with experts, they will visit museums and emblematic places in New York, such as: Color Factory, Cooper Hewitt, and the Whitney Museum. As an option, if you are interested in future educational opportunities you can visit one or two New York universities with the best fashion programs in the industry.

It’s a full week living and breathing fashion from morning to night, and in the most perfect city for all this: New York.

This is a model schedule so you can get an idea of what it is this week, but you will also have the possibility to visit and tour the city if you want.

While this is the official launch of the program, we were already working with Manhattan College on a first program like this one, in September of this year and with UADE.

40 students of the Fashion Design career traveled to New York and this is what they did:

They started the week with a visit to MET, to the Notes on Camp exhibition.

They visited Color Factory, the Whitney Museum, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum and the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) Museum, in the latter cases accompanied by specialized guides.

They had a talk with a person who served as Public Relations Director in W Magazine and Public Relations Manager in Hearst Magazines.

They had visits and talks with fashion experts from Macy’s and Bollare.

The universities they visited: FIT and Parsons, leaders in fashion in the city.

They attended two Fashion Week shows in New York.

And answering some of the questions you asked me yesterday:

Is this the only time this will happen?

The idea is to do it several times in the year, at different times, some coinciding with Fashion Week in New York, and at other times. So they can join in February, but there will be no more opportunities.

Each time the agenda may vary, depending on the time, the interests of those who join, and more.

Will I be a tour guide?

No. As I explained before, this is not a tourist trip, but a program focused on Fashion Design in New York City. Although they can tour and visit the city, that is not the main focus of the trip, but to meet designers, fashion experts, brands, museums … all events and places related to the world of fashion and with people who work in that, with the possibility of making new contacts that can serve them in their careers and / or jobs.

I hope this post has helped you a little more to understand everything behind a project when it is announced, and in particular, what this new program is about to launch with Manhattan College.
