What it’s REALLY LIKE to move to another country

[English translation below}

¡NUEVO LOOK, NUEVA CHARLA!

NO.

Besos, Flor.

NEW LOOK, NEW TALK!

This time it is time for the look number 4 of NYFW and time to tell you what it’s REALLY LIKE moving to another country, something I did not only once, but TWO!

The idea of this post is for it NOT to be a guide on how to move to another country, or how to get a visa or a work permit or a long list of practical advice, but a candid account of how it feels put everything you have in a suitcase, and take a flight to the other side of the world.

For starters, something I usually get asked a lot is if I always knew that I wanted to live in another country and the answer (although it sounds silly or obvious) is YES and NO.

Why YES then? For the books, for the movies and TV shows that I saw and read when I was a girl. I was always curious to explore other places. I always dreamed of going to college or university in the United States (many movies haha). I have already told you that I applied for scholarships to go to do a master’s degree after having received me and also in one of my works I found out about the possibility of continuing to work within the company but in an office abroad. The dream, the desire, the will, the desire … all that was.

However … NO. The truth is that as a girl I didn’t see it possible to look at those around me. No one, but literally none of the people I knew through school, from my family, from my extracurricular activities (like English or artistic gymnastics) … NO ONE had lived or worked in a country other than Argentina. Many people had not even lived anywhere other than Berazategui (the city where I grew up and lived for 20 years). So my dream … was not possible. Or so I thought.

When I was a teenager and a big fan of Avril Lavigne I remember very much listening to the song «Anything but ordinary» that says «Somebody save my life, I’d rather be anything but ordinary please» and I remember thinking that: I want to be anything but «normal.»

It is true that in that «turbulent» age of adolescence one thinks many things that maybe are not so real, or true because we think that everything bad happens to us or that nothing goes well for us … but something that remained constant even when I grew up was not wanting a NORMAL life.

And yet … there I was 4 years ago, in October 2015 with my «normal» life.

Ok, not everything was normal, and I was just very close to making two of the most incredible trips that I had throughout these years, to London and the Caribbean, but also my life was about to take a huge personal turnaround (that seeing it in the distance was going to change EVERYTHING) but inside, and at times, I felt quite empty.

I felt that I was not doing anything special, nor living anything special, and that I simply did not about it that much, so I wouldn’t get depressed (nor is it that I am now in a crusade changing the world, but at least in the day to day I feel much better with my present and what I do).

In the meantime, I had a long distance relationship and constant talks of … «and what if …». And those crazy plans, those ideas without too much support, those dreams finally became something concrete: in July 2016 I flew to New York.

So … it is difficult to answer the question about whether it is something that I have always planned or not. The reality is that it is something I always knew I wanted, but at the same time I didn’t think it was possible.

And even if it looks magical or idyllic, moving to another country is not an easy task and involves a lot of things that one does not even imagine at first.

First of all it means being willing to reinvent yourself and START AGAIN.

Moving to another country can often mean changing jobs, roles, companies… starting completely from scratch in a new career, something that one always dreamed of or something totally unexpected. And it is to accept and embrace that change that comes with the move.

It is discovering a new layers of oneself that we probably did not know existed.

Many times it means starting relationships or things that we ended up again: going back to school, to college, being «the new» in a job, a first date … And the list is eternal. Every day is a new beginning and something new for the first time.

On the other hand, is being willing to LET GO.

Moving to another country is really one of the biggest occasions in which one has to let go, to let go … because there really is no other option.

A few months before traveling to New York in 2016, I read «The Magic of Order» by Marie Kondo. I had the book months ago and for one reason or another I postponed it and never read it. Until practically as if by «magic art» I opened it and started when I needed it most.

More than ever before I needed a change in my life, I felt that nothing material could help with the emotional emptiness and it was the perfect opportunity to get rid of a lot of things, and just moving.

While I work with clothing and beauty brands and having and being able to try and review things is part of what I do every day, I think we don’t really realize how much we accumulate (and how much we really DO NOT need) until the arrival time to move

I always say as a joke that one should move every 2 or 3 years to be able to clean the space in which we live and make a true balance of what we need on a day-to-day basis and…. Moving out of the country exposes you to that even when you don’t want it.

It is impossible to carry EVERYTHING in one, two, three or four bags … and even if you have the possibility of sending boxes or even a container, it is necessary to leave many things behind. Things, memories, mementos … much that represents what we were, what we live, but that is definitely part of our past.

Moving to another country allows, more than anything, perhaps, to start over, to start with a blank slate.

But besides all that, moving out of the country means facing everything new, and the new often creates fear. And it is normal.

Suddenly not only do you not know which is the best supermarket near your home, or how much you prepare your favorite food, but maybe you do not understand the language, how to rent an apartment or how to travel by new transport.

It is learning the most basic things again, and being willing to make mistakes. To not understand jokes or customs or basic phrases, and understand that it is good and that everything, everything takes time.

It is to be patient with yourself. Even in the worst or most difficult times.

But it is also knowing how to see how brave we are, what we were. While moving out of the country is not an option for everyone all the time, many people who could do it without a problem … do not.

Because yes, it is easier and more comfortable to stay where we know eveyrthing. With the city in which we were born, the people we know since we were kids, the language we know since we learned to speak or the career we chose years ago … but if you choose to move … without a doubt you become stronger, braver and grow a lot . Even if you don’t believe it or don’t expect it.

And I definitely recommend it.

I hope you liked this new look and this new talk!

And if you took the plunge, and went to live in another country or if you are thinking about it but still do not dare … leave a comment below, I would love to hear from you, and maybe help you with what you may need. I read them below 🙂

xx, Flor.

A veces me siento perdidisimaaaaa!
