You never change your life until you step out of your comfort zone.

Hace un año le escribí un mensaje a Tomás (mi esposo, que raro suena decirlo jaja – estamos juntos hace más de 5 años) diciendo «Necesito salir de mi zona de confort». A pesar de que realmente me ENCANTA lo que hago (de verdad 😅) sentía que estaba cómoda, en mi trabajo, en mi día a día. Que sabía exactamente qué estaba haciendo y cómo hacerlo. Que los proyectos más grandes quedaban siempre en «pendientes» por la rutina diaria.

Sin embargo, no hacía ni hice nada para cambiar eso. Por motivos y excusas más o menos válidas todo seguía igual. Igual de bien, pero igual…

Hasta que todo empezó a cambiar hace 6 meses.

En abril de este año contactaron a Tomás de una de las empresas más grandes de tecnología del mundo. ¿El plan? Querían contratarlo para trabajar en sus oficinas de Nueva York. Mails, calls, entrevistas… todo encaminado, hasta el momento de llegar a la visa. Y las noticias que no queríamos escuchar pero que esperábamos: Trabajar en Estados Unidos con nuestra visa actual era imposible y todas las otras posibles alternativas eran igualmente improbables.

Mientras organizábamos los últimos detalles de nuestro casamiento en el Airbnb que habíamos alquilado en la zona de Microcentro nos preguntábamos que íbamos a hacer. Muchas veces digo que no me gusta planear a 5 o 10 años porque mucho puede cambiar (y ha cambiado en mi vida en ese espacio de tiempo mirando hacia atrás) pero si tengo, tenemos alguna idea de donde queremos estar, no solo físicamente sino en cuanto a nuestros trabajos y nuestras vidas en el futuro. Y llegar a eso obviamente depende del día a día.

La verdad es que nuestra visa sólo nos permitía quedarnos y trabajar en Estados Unidos hasta junio de 2020. Y entonces teníamos que levantar todo, hacer las valijas e irnos. Y trabajar fuera de ese país al menos por un año, si es que queríamos volver a aplicar a otra visa de trabajo.

Por si aún no lo sabían, la vida del inmigrante y quien está en Estados Unidos con una visa es mucho más complicada de lo que parece. «Es valorar cada día porque esto tiene fecha de expiración» le decía a una persona de una agencia de prensa hace algunos meses y sinceramente es así.

¿Las opciones entonces? Volver a Argentina en junio de 2020 o si no, ir a probar suerte a Europa (yo tengo pasaporte europeo y al estar casados a la otra persona se le «facilita» muchísimo el trámite para poder trabajar en ese continente). La verdad es que ninguna de las dos ideas nos «cerraba» al 100%.

Honestamente, volver a Argentina, por nuestros trabajos, nuestra experiencia en Nueva York, la situación del país (un país que amo y será siempre MI país, pero que honestamente vive siempre en crisis) y varios motivos más, era algo que de algún modo sentíamos como un paso hacia atrás y no era un escenario exactamente ideal.

Y mudarnos a Londres o Amsterdam (nuestras ciudades favoritas del viejo continente) eran opciones arriesgadas sin un trabajo asegurado y lo costoso que es vivir en cualquiera de esos lugares.

Mayo 2019. Con la posibilidad de trabajar en las oficinas de Nueva York de esta empresa «off the table» como se dice (fuera de las posibilidades), y con todo lo anterior, surgió la idea de empezar a buscar otros roles dentro de la misma empresa en sus oficinas en Europa: Londres, Paris, Zurich, Munich…

Más idas y vueltas, más mails, más calls y entrevistas. Y finalmente una oferta. Una posibilidad concreta. Y aceptamos.

Y nos mudamos a Munich, Alemania el 1 de octubre de 2019. Con la idea que sea por ahora y por un tiempo.

Me imagino sus caras en este momento. Los ojos abiertos, diciendo KEEEEEEEE 😱😱😱😱😱😱 en voz alta o para sus adentros… y si, yo estaría (¿o estoy?) igual jajaja así que no sólo vengo a contarles este NOTICIÓN, sino a darles un poco más de contexto:

¿Por qué nos mudamos? Porque Tomás recibió una oferta de trabajo de Google (¡sí!, ¡Google!) para las oficinas de Munich de esta empresa que, afortunadamente, tiene otras oficinas en todo el mundo (y unas de las más grandes en Nueva York, guiño guiño).

¿Había otras opciones? Como les conté más arriba: si y no. Podíamos quedarnos en Nueva York hasta junio de 2020 y aguardar lo inevitable y tener que irnos o «tomar cartas en el asunto» y movernos ahora en pos de nuestro plan a futuro que es, justamente, volver.

¿Es temporal entonces? Sí, esa es nuestra idea y nuestro plan. Como les contaba antes, obligatoriamente tenemos que estar trabajando fuera de Estados Unidos al menos por un año si queremos volver a aplicar a una visa de trabajo como la que tenía Tomas. Idealmente querríamos volver a Nueva York a fines de 2020 o en 2021.

¿Qué pasa con tu trabajo? Mi trabajo va a cambiar un poco pero no tanto.
Por un lado sigo teniendo una dirección en Estados Unidos donde recibir paquetes y sigo y voy a seguir trabajando junto a empresas basadas en Nueva York. Ya tengo planes (¡y pasaje!) para volver en los próximos meses por distintos proyectos. Seguiré yendo a las semanas de la moda y viajando por cosas puntuales.
Por otro lado va a cambiar mi día a día, ya que no voy a tener eventos semanales, pero eso me da la posibilidad de dedicarme a todo eso que justamente les contaba que vengo posponiendo hace meses: mi guía de Nueva York, contenido para YouTube, otro proyecto escrito que empecé a planear hace muy poco y en general más y mejor contenido en todas mis plataformas.
Lo bueno de mi trabajo es que me permite -literal- estar en cualquier parte del mundo y seguir trabajando. Sólo necesito una conexión a internet.
Además, estoy ahora mucho más cerca de Paris y Milan, ciudades con las que sueño hace años visitar para sus Semanas de la Moda… allá nos vemos en febrero 2020 *guiño guiño*

¿Cómo es el tema «legal»? Como les conté arriba y ya varias veces antes, tengo pasaporte de la Union Europea, gracias a mis abuelos, que nacieron ambos en Eslovaquia (y tuvieron que literal escapar durante la Segunda Mundial). Eso facilitó todo porque Tomás puede automáticamente trabajar en Alemania (más allá de algunos trámites locales que tenemos que hacer para registrar domicilio y demás).

¿Qué paso con el departamento en Nueva York? Lo obvio: juntamos todo y nos fuimos. Por suerte nuestro alquiler se terminaba el 30/9 así que nos cerró perfecto. Algunas cosas las mandamos por barco, otras vinieron con nosotros en valijas, otras las vendimos, otras las regalamos y algunas otras se quedaron en una baulera en Nueva York (mi segunda baulera con cosas por el mundo… jajaj tengo otra en Berazategui. «Not ideal» pero la vida jaja).
Y algo más: justo antes de ponernos a desarmar todo filmamos un «apartment tour» así que van a poder ver eso en YouTube… pronto.

¿Oreo? Oreo está con nosotros, por supuesto. Jamás imaginamos mudarnos sin ella. Somos una familia. Nos ocupamos de conseguir los papeles necesarios para que viajara (que ni nos pidieron al llegar a Alemania jaja pero eso es otro tema 😝) y listo. La verdad es que la semana previa al viaje con toda la mudanza, armado de valijas, des-armado del departamento y demás, estuvo muy estresada, pero todo eso desapareció en cuanto llegamos a Munich y de algún modo su vida volvió a la «normalidad».

¿Como va todo por Munich? ¡Bien! Todavía no tenemos departamento, pero estamos en la búsqueda. Esperamos conseguir algo que nos guste pronto. La verdad es que jamás habíamos estado en la ciudad previo a todo esto, así que estamos a de a poco tratando de conocer los barrios y todo.​​​​​​

Y por último… ¿extrañas Nueva York? Por supuesto. Cada día. Despedirnos fue duro, difícil, con algunas lágrimas… Pero es un hasta muy pronto. Porque hay planes, hay pasajes… y siempre se vuelve a lo que uno ama, ¿no?

Y porque además elegimos ver esto como una oportunidad, más que una crisis. La oportunidad de estar literal en el medio de Europa y poder viajar fácil, rápido y barato a cualquier parte y conocer todas esas ciudades y paises con los que soñamos hace años (en especial en Europa del Este). La oportunidad de aprender un nuevo idioma (como si no fuera suficiente con saber español, inglés, portugués y francés, ¿no? jaja). La oportunidad de conocer otras personas, otras costumbres, de vivir en Europa por un tiempo que es algo que siempre quisimos (aunque no sea en nuestras ciudades favoritas jaja). Es cuestión de ver lo positivo en el hoy y enfocarse en cómo llegar a donde queremos estar en el futuro.

Creo que esto responde todas las preguntas que imagino se estaban haciendo pero si hay algo que no expliqué, obviamente pueden dejarme un comentario abajo y respondo. Y si quieren que grabe un video para YouTube contando algo más, también puedo hacerlo.

Pero como lo que más amo es escribir, quería contarles esto por acá, como les conté también cuando me mude a Nueva York hace 3 años.

Ya en ese momento me animé a cambiar todo lo que conocía por un «salto al vacío», y tres años después la historia se repite: No se puede cambiar sin salir de nuestra zona de confort. Es así.

Until everything started to change 6 months ago.

In April of this year they contacted Tomás from one of the largest technology companies in the world. The plan? They wanted to hire him to work in their offices in New York. Mails, calls, interviews … all directed, until the moment of arriving at the visa. And the news we didn’t want to hear but we expected: Working in the United States with our current visa was impossible and all other possible alternatives were equally unlikely.

While we were organizing the last details of our wedding at the Airbnb that we had rented in Buenos Aires we asked ourselves what we were going to do. Many times I say that I don’t like to plan for 5 or 10 years because a lot can change (and it has changed in my life in that space of time looking back) but if I have, we have some idea of ​​where we want to be, not only physically but in As for our jobs and our lives in the future. And getting to that obviously depends on the day to day.

The truth is that our visa only allowed us to stay and work in the United States until June 2020. And then we had to lift everything, make the bags and leave. And work outside that country for at least one year, if we wanted to reapply for another work visa.

In case you still didn’t know, the life of the immigrant and who is in the United States with a visa is much more complicated than it seems. «It is to value every day because this has an expiration date,» he told a person from a press agency a few months ago and it is sincerely so.

The options then? Going back to Argentina in June 2020 or else, going to try your luck in Europe (I have a European passport and being married to the other person makes it very easy for you to work in that continent). The truth is that neither of the two ideas «closed» us 100%.

Honestly, returning to Argentina, for our work, our experience in New York, the situation of the country (a country that I love and will always be MY country, but that honestly always lives in crisis) and several other reasons, was something that somehow We felt like a step backwards and it wasn’t an exactly ideal scenario.

And moving to London or Amsterdam (our favorite cities of the old continent) were risky options without secured work and how expensive it is to live in any of those places.

May 2019. With the possibility of working in the New York offices of this company «off the table» as it is said (outside the possibilities), and with all the above, the idea arose to start looking for other roles within the same company in its offices in Europe: London, Paris, Zurich, Munich …

More comings and goings, more mails, more calls and interviews. And finally an offer. A concrete possibility. And we accept

And we moved to Munich, Germany on October 1, 2019. With the idea of staying here for now and for a while.

I imagine your faces right now. Eyes wide open, saying WAIT WATTT … and yes, I would be (or am I) the same hahaha so I not only come to tell you this BIG NEWS, but to give you a little more context:

Why did we move? Because Tom received a job offer for the Munich offices of this company (Google!) that, fortunately, has other offices around the world (and one of the largest in New York, wink wink).

Were there other options? As I told you above: yes and no. We could stay in New York until June 2020 and wait for the inevitable and have to leave or «take action on the matter» and move now in pursuit of our future plan, which is precisely to return.

Is it temporary then? Yes, that is our idea and our plan. As I told you before, we must be working outside the United States for at least one year if we want to reapply for a work visa like the one that Tomas had. Ideally we would like to return to New York at the end of 2020 or in 2021.

What happens to your work? My work will change a little but not so much.
On one hand I still have an address in the United States where I receive packages and I continue and I will continue working with companies based in New York. I already have plans (and ticket!) To return in the coming months for different projects. I will continue going to the fashion weeks and traveling for specific things.

On the other hand it will change my day to day, since I will not have weekly events, but that gives me the possibility of dedicating myself to all that I just told you that I have been postponing months ago: my New York guide, content for YouTube , another written project that I started planning very recently and in general more and better content on all my platforms.
The good thing about my job is that it allows me – literally – to be anywhere in the world and keep working. I just need an internet connection.
In addition, I am now much closer to Paris and Milan, cities that I dream of visiting years ago for their Fashion Weeks … see you there in February 2020 * wink wink *

How does this work like… legally? As I told you above and several times before, I have a passport from the European Union, thanks to my grandparents, who were both born in Slovakia (and had to literally escape during the Second World Cup). That made everything easier because Tom can automatically work in Germany (beyond some local procedures that we have to do to register domicile and others).

What happened to the department in New York? The obvious: we put everything together and left. Luckily our rental ended on 9/30 so it closed us perfect. Some things we sent them by boat, others came with us in suitcases, others we sold them, others we gave them away and some others stayed in a storage room in New York (my second storage with things around the world… hahaha I have another one in Berazategui. Not ideal but life haha).
And something else: just before we take everything apart we filmed an «apartment tour» so they will be able to see that on YouTube … soon.

Oreo? Oreo is with us, of course. We never imagined moving without her. We are a family. We take care of getting the necessary papers to travel (they didn’t even ask us to get to Germany haha ​​but that’s another topic 😝) and that’s it. The truth is that the week before the trip with all the moving, armed with suitcases, unarmed the department and others, was very stressed, but all that disappeared as soon as we arrived in Munich and somehow his life returned to «normal ».

How’s everything going in Munich? We are on the search for an apartment. We hope to get something we like soon. The truth is that we had never been in the city before all this, so we are slowly trying to know the neighborhoods and everything.

And finally … do you miss New York? Of course. Every day. Saying goodbye was hard, difficult, with a few tears … But it’s a see you soon. Because there are plans, there are passages … and you always return to what you love, right?

And because we also choose to see this as an opportunity, rather than a crisis. The opportunity to be literal in the middle of Europe and be able to travel easily, quickly and cheaply anywhere and to know all those cities and countries that we dreamed of years ago (especially in Eastern Europe). The opportunity to learn a new language (as if it wasn’t enough to know Spanish, English, Portuguese and French, right? Haha). The opportunity to meet other people, other customs, to live in Europe for a time that is something we always wanted (even if it is not in our favorite cities haha). It is a matter of seeing the positive in today and focusing on how to get where we want to be in the future.
