2022: My goals and systems.

[Englis translation below – scroll down!]

«Goals are good for planning your progress and systems are good for actually making progress. Goals can provide direction and […] push you forward in the short-term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win. Having a system is what matters.»

excerpt from Chapter 1 of Atomic Habits by James Clear

Mi «dream year» o «año soñado».

¿O no?

“Goals are good for planning your progress and systems are good for actually making progress. Goals can provide direction and […] push you forward in the short-term, but eventually a well-designed system will always win. Having a system is what matters.”

excerpt from Chapter 1 of Atomic Habits by James Clear

In 2019 I started a new series of blog posts, always at the beginning of the year. My «dream year» or «dream year».

But at the beginning of last year I read the book «Atomic Habits» by James Clear, and I was really fascinated with the idea that the author proposes: the key to being able to move forward and fulfill what we propose and want to achieve is NOT to have plans or goals or objectives, but SYSTEMS. It is the systems that make us progress, the «how» we are going to get to something, and not just the desire for that something.

That’s why I felt that writing a new post with my «dream year» this year was going to sound a bit repetitive and even not very honest with myself. The key was not in «dreaming» my year but in organizing myself and creating systems in my day to day that allow me to achieve that.

That is why the title of this post: objectives and systems. The objectives tell us what we want to achieve, what we aspire to, and the systems what we are going to do (or change) in our lives and our routines to achieve it.

Thus, after months without writing a personal post (more than months… almost a year) I wanted to talk to you again through this medium with a post where I could talk to you as if we were among friends. Tell them what I want to do this year, what I would like to do and how I hope to achieve it, and perhaps inspire them to do the same: how to have systems that help them achieve their goals… and not just goals without a real plan of action.

And yes, I know that we are almost in March, but… is it better late than never? I hope you agree and keep reading me.

DO SOME KIND OF EXERCISE AT LEAST 5 DAYS A WEEK FOR 30 MINUTES.

One of my goals this year is this: «exercise.» The problem? Very little specific. What is exercise? How many days? How long?

This meant that every time my routine got a little more complicated or the weather changed or I felt a little discouraged… I would abandon all progress.

This time I am trying to have better systems that allow me not to fall into those trends.

On Monday, January 31, I started an exercise on the treadmill called «12-3-30» and since then there has not been a single day that I did not exercise or if there was a day that I did not do it… do not let the «do not do» » became my new routine, but the next day «I went back to the ring».

12-3-30 is putting the treadmill on 12 elevation, 3 speed (3 miles, which is 4.8 km) and doing that exercise for 30 minutes. In theory it works a lot, but for me the key was that it encouraged me to move and get out of bed in the morning and go to the gym, regardless of the weather or the desire.

I realized that whenever I tried to train in the afternoon, I ended up finding an excuse to do nothing: that I had to keep working, that I didn’t have time, that I had already done a lot that day, that I was tired, that I just wanted to eat. and go to sleep…

On the other hand, in the morning I feel that I don’t have so many excuses: it’s getting up, changing, and even half asleep, going to the gym for 30 minutes.

What works for me may not work for you, but my point here is: find a system that works for you. And if one day you get tired, or lazy or excuses, that’s fine, that can happen to all of us. The key is that it doesn’t happen two days in a row, because if you don’t you are starting to create a new routine: one in which you do NOT exercise.

And now it’s 3 weeks of exercise: treadmill or going for a walk outside, but one way or another getting at least 25 minutes of exercise and honestly…feels good. It feels good not to run out of breath going up and down the subway stairs, and instead to feel my leg muscles “acting”.

Perhaps this may sound silly or basic but… goal + system are aligned, and they are working.

CREATE CONTENT ON MY PLATFORMS THAT I ENJOY

Other years when it came to my content on networks, the objective I listed was: «create more, grow, have more followers.» And the reality is that while that may be a good goal, there was a factor that did not depend on me but on other people: grow in followers my platforms.

So this year I want to focus on what I can control: upload more photos and videos to my Instagram account, more posts here to the blog, more videos to my YouTube channels, more content to my TikTok account that I started recently…

Make content that I am proud of, content that I can see again in one, two, five years and keep saying: I love what I wrote, I love how that video was edited.

I feel like the last few years I’ve really produced content that I review and would do again today, because I really like it. Sometimes that made more people join this community, sometimes those who were already part of the community stayed, but maybe other people did not feel identified and decided to click the “unfollow” button. And it is to understand that this is normal and does not depend on me. Or not?

So this year, and from now on, the idea is to be able to maintain a certain consistency on my platforms, and that those who enjoy what I do can find more of it periodically. More video, more posts, more. But not only more but content that I can feel proud of, regardless of whether it works more or less or whether or not it ends up being something “viral”.

I would love to have a better system here: to be able to say how many hours I am going to dedicate to each thing each day or each week… and although something is on the way, and my Google Calendar already has distributed blocks, I would be lying if I said that I comply with those systems strictly. But I hope that in the next month those systems will become my reality, in organized days, and eventually in more content that I enjoy (and hopefully you will too).

ORGANIZE MY AGENDA BETTER.

Drown in a glass of water? that’s me.

Sometimes I don’t really know what’s wrong with me… but every time I have to do something I make it a «big event» and let it get over me before I even start.

For this reason, a few months ago I started using the “calendar blocking” system to try to organize every moment of every day.

As James Clear says in his book, some people think that this leaves no room for creativity or spontaneity, but in truth, it allows more free time «at the mental level» to be more free or spontaneous, because we have planned what we want. we need to do every day or every week.

I think I’m still trying to adapt to this, to stick to what my schedule says, to be able to change plans if necessary, to organize myself better… definitely.

But at least it’s one of my goals, and I have a system.

SOCIALIZE… MORE.

A few days ago I saw a video of Elena Taber in which she told how after 3 years of living in New York, she had finally found «her of her» group of her people, «her of her» group of friends here in the city. And how that had been the result of intentionally trying to build friendships: interacting with people, getting together for lunch or coffee with someone, making time for THAT.

I feel like the first 3 years I lived in New York my focus was elsewhere: settling down, spending time with Tom, getting to know a lot about the city, growing my audience and more… but not so much on making a group of friends. , or at least something that resembled a group of friends.

And although yes, there are people that I consider friends and I love here in New York, this year I want to make myself more available to the universe (ha!) and meet more people: say more YES to coffees, to lunches , to dinners, to events…

Obviously during the last two years, with the pandemic, I hardly saw anyone, and even before that, I feel that every time an opportunity arose, I preferred to say no. I preferred to stay for hours and hours filming or editing videos, or just doing nothing. And while sometimes social interactions can be demanding or exhausting… how do I know if I can make a group of friends in this city if I really don’t try?

The system for this: organize at least one meeting per week. And continue from there. Do more things with the people I feel I connect with, see them again, invite them to do things together and see if something progresses and looks like a friendship.

Making friends does NOT depend on me, clearly, but it DOES depend on me making myself available to meet new people and establish bonds. So… we’ll see how this works.

PLAN LESS, DO MORE.

«Perfection is the enemy of progress» is a phrase that is attributed to Winston Churchill and although it is very true, today I have a hard time putting it into practice.

I love to plan. My days, my hours, my weeks, my networks, my videos, plan my plans.

But sometimes just DOING, STARTING, is much better than planning. Of all my online platforms, the only one to which I spent very little planning time and directly started, Twitch, was the one that took off the most in the least time.

Chance? I do not believe it. (Or well, maybe it was a coincidence, but since it confirms my point, let’s imagine that it wasn’t haha)

So it is that for months or even years I have been planning other things, which have never seen the light of day until now: my presets (the page is ready, I only have to decide the price and put together the user guide), a podcast (I think I I decided on the name after a thousand laps… and I’ve had the theme for a long time), «merch» (sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, bags…) and the list could go on.

Of course I am one and I can’t handle everything, but what if I could? What if I organized my days better? Would he or would he keep looking for excuses? Would I still look for my product, my project, to be perfect before it sees the light?

This year I want to remind myself more of what I always tell everyone when they ask me how to start creating content: start. Start with what you have, with what you can, with what comes out. Then it will be time to improve, the time to perfect your product, your platform, the time to make adjustments. But first: you have to start.

5 goals, 5 plans with systems seem like a good idea to start this year and to share with you.

Just so you know what’s going on in my head, what I’ve been doing (or not doing) these past few months, and also to share a bit of “behind the scenes” that you sometimes don’t see when scrolling through Instagram.

I think that knowing that we all have flaws, things that we would like to improve, things that don’t turn out the way we wanted, things that we are working on non-stop… makes us look and feel more real. With the other, but with ourselves as well.

I hope you liked this first post of 2022. If you feel like it, you can tell me in the comments what your goals (and your systems) are for this new year and if you would like me to talk more about all this here and on YouTube.

See you in the next post 🙂

xx, Flor.
