When Mia Warren, an artist who has been living a nomadic lifestyle as a single mother, arrives in town with her daughter, Pearl, it threatens everything that Mrs. Richardson and her family have known up until that moment… leading up to her own house setting on fire (no spoiler, literally the first chapter!)
The novel is a powerful meditation on motherhood and the sometimes-tenuous bond between mother and child, while it shows how usually things are not as easy as right or wrong, but how complicated and messy life actually is.
