How I built a career as an influencer & content creator in New York City | Look 1 NYFW September 2019 | The power suit

[English translation below – scroll down to read!]

¿Vieron esa frase que dice «fake it till you make it»?

Besos!!

Flor.

In July 2016 I arrived in New York.

I had started pennylaneblog.com in May 2010, a few months after receiving me as a lawyer, as a creative space, as a place of inspiration, as a hobby, but nothing more.

However, 6 years later, the blog had grown much, much more than I could ever imagine, allowing me to work with brands I had dreamed of (and used) for years, as well as traveling, to the Caribbean, to London, Ushuaia already.

However, arriving in New York was literally starting from ZERO.

I didn’t know anyone or had any plans, nor did I know exactly how I was going to be able to dedicate myself full time to creating online content (because yes, I had quit my job as a lawyer in May 2016).

However, 3 years later, I have the possibility of working with some of the biggest brands in the United States and the world (Sephora, Vogue Magazine, Steve Madden, Carolina Herrera or Urban Decay, just to name a few).

And maybe if they follow me recently (or a long time ago) they ask themselves: How did I do it? How do you go from not knowing anyone to meet people of the most important brands and agencies? How did I build a career as an influencer and content creator in New York?

Well… keep reading 🙂

START WORKING

The first thing I did was get to work on what I wanted to work. Did you see that phrase that says «fake it till you make it»? I never liked it hahaha, but it somehow means «to make an account» that you work what you want, until you are finally working on what you want (do you understand?)

And what do I mean by this? I started filming, editing and uploading videos to YouTube 3 times a week (yes, 3 !!), to write new blog posts 2 times a week, upload more and more content to Instagram.

What I was doing (how years ago, but more «intensely») was to create and «strengthen» my portfolio. Doing more and better work that could at some point show a brand, or anyone who found me «on the web», that what they saw would excite them to follow me or eventually hire me.

All this he did for nothing, to put it somehow. Just for the pleasure and fun of creating content … and because creating content was my new job! And again, thinking about how all that could bring me future work.

MAKE NEW CONTACTS

Searching and finding contacts in times of the Internet is really easy. It is a matter of Google who is in charge of a brand, or which agency has a client or which influencers are based in the city.

And I did all that. I began to follow influencers who lived and worked in New York, with different audiences.

Before arriving I think I only knew Danielle, from We Wore What and Luanna, because they were the people with the largest audiences on Instagram (over a million) at the time I moved.

However, over time I discovered many other people (I would tell them between 300 and 500!) Who also live and work (many full-time) as influencers in the city, which I only discovered being here. Someone tagged someone on Instagram, or a magazine made a note or by exploring Instagram.

Meeting these other people (at least virtually) helped me understand that maybe there could be room for me and for my work in the city, because when I arrived I thought it was only possible to «succeed» by having millions of followers (and I was SUPER wrong).

BE YOUR OWN SPOKEPERSON

This is undoubtedly what cost me the most, because despite being a relatively «public» person on the internet years ago, I am quite shy and quiet in real life. But I had to change that.

In the first event that they invited me (I invite an acquaintance of an acquaintance who just knew I was in New York … that is, almost almost I was pouring haha), I had to introduce myself. Saying who he was, what he was doing, how long he had arrived.

It’s time to meet new people, exchange Instagram users, start interacting with other people, find connections, contacts, everything … even if little by little.

I always count as a funny anecdote that I contacted (nothing more and nothing less than) MAC Cosmetics in the United States for cheering me up! I was coming out of a fashion show at Fashion Week when I saw one of my favorite UK tubers, so I took courage, and went over to say hello. Coincidentally, I had traveled to NYFW invited by MAC UK, and I also greeted the person I was with, we exchanged personal cards, I sent him an email the next day and he put me in touch with the person in charge of the brand in the United States. The rest, as they say, is «history.»

SAY YES

Another of the things that I believe is key at the beginning, that is to say if new opportunities, events, meet new people. It is not the time, in my opinion, to reject something «just because», because literally in this city every exit is the opportunity to meet the person who can change your life or give you your next job.

That’s how I joined all the Fohr U (events organized by Fohr), all the talks, every event that my favorite influencer in NY promoted that I was going to be presenting something … it’s THE time to meet new people.

I confess that today I am not going to many events, precisely because I am more careful with my time (because I have many other things to do «behind the scenes») and because fortunately I already know many people in the «middle». But in the first year in New York I literally signed up for ALL the events that invited me or that I found out there were in the city, that were within my «industry» and where I knew or believed I could meet someone new.

USE ALL TOOLS IN YOUR FAVOR

As I said before, today, with the Internet, it is possible to know EVERYTHING … or well, almost hahaha.

That’s how I searched and found, through Google, Instagram, Linkedin and even YouTube: platforms for brands and influencers (with whom I continue to work and through which I got a LOT of work), platforms to test and review new products, Direct contacts of brands (to which I sent emails and they responded!), press agencies and the clients they worked with (who invite me today to lots of events per week and have led me to paid work with brands ) … everything, everything, everything (or well, almost everything) is on the Internet, if one has the patience and perseverance to look for it.

Nothing came to me as a gift, nor in a tray, as they say. I have no famous friends or relatives or connections. No one introduced me to the press officer at MAC Cosmetics. I got it.

Nobody gave me a super important contract with Google. I got it.

As you can imagine, there are no magic formulas, and what worked for one person may not work for another, but I wanted to share with you in this post, some of the things that served me most in the first years in New York, and I feel that, with perseverance and a lot of work behind me, they allowed me to get to where I am today.

I hope I have been helpful and for anything, you can write me below in the comments.
